The Russo Brothers Reveal One Scene They Cut From ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

The directing duo of Anthony and Joe Russo had a pretty demanding job while working on the #1 movie in the world, ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’  With twenty-something leading characters, the brothers had to make sure that each got at least one moment to shine.  The result is a two and a half hour spectacle that, by most accounts, works.  Many times, fans demand a “director’s cut” of certain action movies, in hopes of getting even more bang for their buck, but in the case of ‘Infinity War’, the theatrical version is basically all there was to see.  Well almost.

According to Joe Russo:

“Our first directors’ cut was probably 2:40 or 2:30.  We’re pretty close to where the directors’ cut was.  You have to be so vigilant in the script phase about what you are going to include in the movie just from a storytelling standpoint and be really difficult on the material, because it is so expensive to acquire the material and you have limited time with some of the actors. Schedules don’t always line up, so you have to be really targeted.”

But there was at least one scene that left on the cutting room floor.

As Joe added:

“I think there’s one really funny Guardians scene that didn’t make the cut.  Everything else was just sort of little loose ends here and there… It’s just more of a straight-up comedic scene.”

His brother, Anthony continued:

“It’s a scene where they’re sort of stuck. There’s a point in the movie where they’re stuck without knowing what to do. And it was just this absurd scene of the Guardians not knowing where to go. And it was really fun and it was very endearing to us. But because the movie is so big and so propulsive, it just wasn’t quite pushing us where we needed to go.”

James Gunn, the director of the two ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies, consulted with the ‘Infinity War’ writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely in order to get those characters’ voices just right.  The Russos even worked in a classic 1970’s pop hit, ‘Rubberband Man’ by The Spinners, in order to echo the pop-heavy ‘GotG’ films.

As for the missing Guardians scene?  Joe assures “It will be on the DVD.”

No telling when the DVD/BluRay will be released, considering how well the film is performing at the box office.  So there will be a few months before we get a chance to view the missing scene.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ stars Dave Bautista, Paul Bettany, Chadwick Boseman, Josh Brolin, Don Cheadle, Carrie Coon, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benicio Del Toro, Peter Dinklage, Robert Downey Jr., Winston Duke, Idris Elba, Chris Evans, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Tom Holland, Scarlett Johansson, Pom Klementieff, Anthony Mackie, Terry Notary, Elizabeth Olsen, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Pratt, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Saldana, Michael James Shaw, Sebastian Stan, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Benedict Wong, and Letitia Wright, with the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.  It is playing in a Cineplex near you now.

Jason Motes

Jason’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes. Jason’s father gamely agreed to read him comic books as bedtime stories instead of ‘Snow White.’ (Super Friends being his favorite.) Jason saw all of the original Star Wars movies (and Indiana Jones and Superman and Star Trek…) in the theaters. Yes, he is old. And grew up in the most GEEKTASTIC decade ever, the 80s, devouring a steady diet of GI Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Princess of Power and (best of all) Jem! (It totally counts as sci fi! They had a sentient computer that projected holograms!) Jason has studied literature, journalism, film history and has a degree in creative writing (and a minor in psychology) from the University of South Alabama. He has worked as a technical writer and proofreader. These days, most of his creative energy goes into his blog and writing for this site! He lives with the cutest puppies ever.
