Marvel Studios’ ‘Captain Marvel’ has been filming for a while now, but it has just added another prestigious actor to its cast, Annette Bening. Bening’s role was vaguely described as being a scientist, but Variety’s Justin Kroll is reporting that she will be playing the mother of Brie Larson‘s lead character, Carol Danvers.

Though she is a well-respected actor, Bening tends to avoid big budget popcorn flicks in favor of deeper dramas– the kind that gets awards nominations. Bening herself has been nominated four times for the Academy Award, for ‘The Grifters’ (1991), ‘American Beauty’ (2000), ‘Being Julia’ (2005) and ‘The Kids Are Alright’ (2011). Though she hasn’t yet won an Oscar, she has taken home Golden Globes for ‘Being Julia’ and ‘The Kids Are Alright’. In a back-handed compliment kind of way, she also won the AARP Movies For Grownups Award for her most recent film ‘Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool’. Her newest film, ‘The Seagull’, an adaptation of the Anton Chekov play, premieres this weekend and co-stars Saoirse Ronan and Elisabeth Moss.
‘Captain Marvel’ is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. In addition to Larson, the cast includes Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Colin Ford, Gemma Chan, Kenneth Mitchell and Lashana Lynch. This film will also feature Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson, making their long-anticipated returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also returning are Lee Pace and Djimon Hounsou, reprising their ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ characters, Ronan the Accuser and Korath the Pursuer.
Carol Danvers’ introduction was teased in the ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ post-credits stinger. ‘Captain Marvel’ is set in the 1990s, but Larson is expected to bring her character into the present in ‘Avengers 4’.
Before that, Bening will be seen on the small screen in the next season of ‘American Crime Story’, which is based on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
