‘Silver & Black’ Writers Are Going Back To The Drawing Board; Sony Removes It From Its Schedule

Sony had scheduled the ‘Spider-Man’ spinoff ‘Silver & Black’ to be released on February 8, 2019, which is now less than a year away, but considering that casting has not even begun yet, it’s not surprising that Sony has removed the film from its release schedule.  In fact, according to sources, the script still needs some work, so writers Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (‘Captain Marvel’) are “going back to the drawing board” to refine the screenplay.  Sony has not picked a new release date, but director Gina Prince-Bythewood assured that the film was still in the pipeline, but that all involved wanted to make sure the project was just right.

“With Silver and Black, when you’re doing a film of that magnitude, it’s gotta be right. And if it’s not right, we actually collectively decided to go back to the drawing board and start over. That’s gonna take time. So obviously, I’d love to be shooting right now, but to be shooting something that I know is not as good as it can be, I’m not the type that wants to shoot something you’re rewriting, as you’re shooting. So, we have to get the script right, and I’m okay to wait. I may be shooting something before that, but it really is just get the script right before we go on that journey.”

In the meantime, Prince-Bythewood is making the rounds to promote ‘Cloak & Dagger’, Freeform’s new Marvel series.  She directed the pilot, which premieres this Thursday night.

She also took a moment to discuss the differences between adapting a Marvel property to film versus television:

“I guess I would say, on the film side, everything is magnified. It’s a lot of money. That’s why, if you’re gonna spend that much money, let’s make sure that we’re telling a good story. There’s more voices and more money, and it’s just a bigger sandbox. Marvel Television is doing such cool, innovative things. It’s really exciting to start there, and things that I learned on that, I will absolutely bring to the bigger sandbox.”

Just to clarify, ‘Cloak & Dagger’ comes from Marvel Television, a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment, while ‘Silver & Black’ is a Sony project, although it may include Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man/Peter Parker (um… provided he comes back to life), who is shared between Sony and Marvel Studios, which is not affiliated with Marvel Television beyond both being Disney brands now.

‘Silver & Black’ will feature the characters Silver Sable and Black Cat.  Silver Sable is a mercenary and leader of a team of commandos called the Wild Pack.  Black Cat is an acrobatic burglar who causes bad luck to befall those that stand in her way.

Sony has other Spider-Man-based films in the pipeline.  ‘Venom’ starring Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams opens on October 5 of this year.  Reportedly, the studio is also developing films featuring Morbius the Living Vampire and Nightwatch.

Are you disappointed that ‘Silver & Black’ has been delayed?  Or are you glad they are taking the time to get this project just right?

Jason Motes

Jason’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes. Jason’s father gamely agreed to read him comic books as bedtime stories instead of ‘Snow White.’ (Super Friends being his favorite.) Jason saw all of the original Star Wars movies (and Indiana Jones and Superman and Star Trek…) in the theaters. Yes, he is old. And grew up in the most GEEKTASTIC decade ever, the 80s, devouring a steady diet of GI Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Princess of Power and (best of all) Jem! (It totally counts as sci fi! They had a sentient computer that projected holograms!) Jason has studied literature, journalism, film history and has a degree in creative writing (and a minor in psychology) from the University of South Alabama. He has worked as a technical writer and proofreader. These days, most of his creative energy goes into his blog and writing for this site! He lives with the cutest puppies ever.
