Even Autobots Get Rickrolled In First ‘Bumblebee’ Trailer

Ever since it was announced that Paramount wanted to create a Transformers cinematic universe, fans have been wondering what to expect. It seemed the studio was on the right track when they revealed that everyone’s favorite Autobot Bumblebee would be the star of the first extended universe film and now we have our first look at the movie with this newly released trailer!

Unlike the other ‘Transformers’ films, ‘Bumblebee’ is the first in the franchise not directed by Michael Bay, although he still is onboard as a producer. Taking helmer duties this time around is Travis Knight who is better known in the animation field and made his directorial debut with ‘Kubo and the Two Strings.” The fact that Bay was not behind the camera is clearly evident as instead of the expected Bayham that seems prevalent in prior ‘Transformer’ films (don’t get me wrong as there are explosions and such here), the trailer takes on more of an emotional and nostalgic tone reminiscent of a ‘Herbie’ Disney film.  But I guess that should be expected as ‘Bumblebee’ does take place in the 80s (1987 to be exact) and the bright yellow Volkswagen will bring memories and feels to those who grew up with the franchise during that time.

Next to Bumblebee and his transforming abilities, Hailee Steinfeld as Charlie Watson steals the screen as the teen who buys the VW Beetle in hopes to refurbish it and escape the life she currently is living. What she didn’t imagine is that the beat-up bug would be a shapeshifting alien robot who is on the run from government agency Sector 7 Transformer hunter Agent Burns (John Cena).

‘Bumblebee’ is a definite change of pace to the usual ‘Transformers’ films and that may be what the franchise needs right now. Check out the synopsis below followed by the trailer, then let us know what you think in the comments below!

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small
Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18
and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred
and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary,
yellow VW bug.

‘Bumblebee’ transforms in theaters on Dec. 21.

Janice Kay

Janice’s first memories of the genre were of watching the original ‘Star Trek’ and classic ‘Doctor Who’ episodes (Tom Baker, aka the Fourth Doctor, was her first). Soon, she was introduced to ‘Godzilla’ and her addiction then spread to books, magazines, movies and comics. Janice continued as a closet geek as her thirst and love for sci-fi grew and was only second to her love of baking. Then one night, on a whim, she answered a tweet to be a writer for ScienceFiction.com and the geek girl insider her was soon set free. Within 3 years she became the Senior Editor for the site. When not writing or editing for ScienceFiction.com, Janice is scouring the internet to feed her sci-fi cravings while defending conspiracy theories, protecting scientific theorems and loving all things science fiction…. and baking cookies.
