Geoff Johns Will Write And Produce The ‘Green Lantern Corps’ Movie

Now that Geoff Johns has stepped down as DC Comics president and chief creative officer, he has more time for creative endeavors.  Not that he ever stopped writing comics, TV shows and contributing to film scripts, but now he can dig his heels in even deeper.  We already know that he is launching a pop-up imprint at DC called The Killing Zone and will be penning a new ‘Shazam!’ series as well as a project called ‘Three Jokers’.  Now we have learned that his first major media project will be writing and producing the ‘Green Lantern Corps’ movie.

Johns wrote the ‘Green Lantern’ comic book for nine years, during which time it was one of DC’s best sellers.  It was under Johns’ hand that the most famous Lantern, Hal Jordan, returned to life and soared to new heights in popularity.  The screenplay for ‘Green Lantern Corps’, written by David S. Goyer and Justin Rhodes was already believed to have borrowed heavily from Johns’ comic run, but now that bond may be even tighter.  It is unclear at this point whether Johns will be building on Goyer’s existing screenplay or if he is starting from scratch with his own ideas.

Since this film was announced, it has been believed that the story would feature two Earth GLs, Hal Jordan and John Stewart and it was described tonally as “‘Lethal Weapon’ in space.”  However, the latest rumor is that the film will actually highlight the newest GLs Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz, two characters that Johns co-created.  Indeed, if that is the case, then it makes sense that Johns would be writing a completely new script, especially if the previous draft focused on Hal and John.

Johns is co-writing the script for ‘Wonder Woman 2’ and has a story credit on ‘Aquaman’.  It remains to be seen whether he will get a credit for ‘Shazam!’ too but it is known that that movie is also based on his work on the New 52 reboot of the concept.  His DC Comics work has also inspired a number of the direct to video animated movies that Warner Brothers has released in recent years.

He has also written for the TV shows ‘Smallville’, ‘Justice League Unlimited’, ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Robot Chicken’ and ‘Titan Maximus’ and he is listed as the creator of the upcoming ‘Titans’.

‘Green Lantern Corps’ is still scheduled for release on July 24, 2020, but that will undoubtedly change.

Jason Motes

Jason’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes. Jason’s father gamely agreed to read him comic books as bedtime stories instead of ‘Snow White.’ (Super Friends being his favorite.) Jason saw all of the original Star Wars movies (and Indiana Jones and Superman and Star Trek…) in the theaters. Yes, he is old. And grew up in the most GEEKTASTIC decade ever, the 80s, devouring a steady diet of GI Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Princess of Power and (best of all) Jem! (It totally counts as sci fi! They had a sentient computer that projected holograms!) Jason has studied literature, journalism, film history and has a degree in creative writing (and a minor in psychology) from the University of South Alabama. He has worked as a technical writer and proofreader. These days, most of his creative energy goes into his blog and writing for this site! He lives with the cutest puppies ever.
