Arrowverse Crossover Is More Character Driven… Especially Between These Two

2017’s crossover between The CW’s Arrowverse shows, ‘Invasion!’ has the heroes from two worlds and throughout the time stream fighting off a race of sharp-toothed, telepathic aliens.  It was a fun thrill ride incorporating more costume-clad heroes than had ever been seen on TV before.  Things became even more epic last year, with the ‘Crisis on Earth-X’ event, which had the champions of ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ and ‘Supergirl’ combining their forces to emancipate a parallel Earth where the Nazis won World War II and, in the process, recast some familiar do-gooders as Nazi stormtroopers.  But the producers that they couldn’t go any bigger, so perhaps they’re going better.

This year, the ‘Legends of Tomorrow‘ have been benched, while the stars of ‘Arrow’, ‘The Flash’ and ‘Supergirl’ will head to Earth-1’s Gotham City for the first time and meet up with a fledgling hero trying to make a difference.  Even though Stephen Amell said that, “I can’t say sh**!” he did say:

“But I do know that when it got pitched to me, when [executive producer] Greg [Berlanti] pitched it to me, I was like, ‘Oh man, that’s awesome! Really?!’… Because we went so big with the crossover last year, you can’t go bigger, so you have to go more about the characters and the story.”

While producers are obviously keeping mum about significant plot details, expect a new spin on the ‘World’s Finest’ as Supergirl and Ruby Rose‘s new hero Batwoman get a bit of face-time.  As Melissa Benoist exclaimed:

“Throughout the seasons, Kara’s had a few funny quips about Batman and her opinions on him – she thinks vigilantes are nuts.  So I’m excited to see her meet Batwoman, and see how they interact.”

It’s funny, because granted, Oliver and Kara haven’t always had the best working relationship, but he’s the closest thing the Arrowverse has to Batman.  Take away the bow schtick, and is there really that much of a difference?

On The CW, ‘The Flash’ season five kicks off on Tuesday, October 9, followed by ‘Supergirl’ season four on Sunday, October 14, ‘Arrow’ season seven on Monday, October 15 and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’ season 4 on Monday , October 22.

Jason Motes

Jason’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes. Jason’s father gamely agreed to read him comic books as bedtime stories instead of ‘Snow White.’ (Super Friends being his favorite.) Jason saw all of the original Star Wars movies (and Indiana Jones and Superman and Star Trek…) in the theaters. Yes, he is old. And grew up in the most GEEKTASTIC decade ever, the 80s, devouring a steady diet of GI Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Princess of Power and (best of all) Jem! (It totally counts as sci fi! They had a sentient computer that projected holograms!) Jason has studied literature, journalism, film history and has a degree in creative writing (and a minor in psychology) from the University of South Alabama. He has worked as a technical writer and proofreader. These days, most of his creative energy goes into his blog and writing for this site! He lives with the cutest puppies ever.
