Chris Evans Wraps Playing Captain America… For Good

We knew this was coming, but that doesn’t make it suck less.  Chris Evans has officially wrapped his reshoots for ‘Avengers 4’ and is leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good.  Evans tweeted a thank you/goodbye message on Twitter, thanking his costars, the crews that have worked on his movies and the fans.

Evans had previously expressed that he was almost done with the role of Captain America and was looking forward to new endeavors.  In March, he declared, “You want to get off the train before they push you off.”  It doesn’t appear that anyone was stepping up to push him off, though.  Evans’ Cap appears to have some celebrity fans who also took to Twitter to express their dismay at his exit.

Ryan Reynolds is best known for playing another Marvel Comics character in Fox’s ‘Deadpool’ movies, wrote:

Dwayne Johnson also chimed in, wishing Evans the best in the future:

Evans had previously starred as another Marvel character, the Human Torch in Fox’s ‘Fantastic Four’ movies in 2005 and 2007.  He also appeared in quasi-superhero movie ‘Push’ and in ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World’ and later ‘Snowpiercer’, both based on comics.

He made his debut as Captain America in 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’.  (Released as simply ‘The First Avenger’ in some regions where they hate Americans.)  He went on to star in ‘Avengers’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’.  He also made cameos in ‘Thor: The Dark World’, ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’.

Shockingly, Evans almost passed on the role because filming of ‘The First Avenger’  conflicted with his shooting the romantic comedy ‘What’s Your Number?’ with Anna Farris.  Remember that?  Nope.  No one does.

Evans reportedly beat out Wilson Bethel, Michael Cassidy, Chace Crawford, Patrick Flueger, Garrett Hedlund, John Krasinski, Scott Porter, and Mike Vogel for the role, and his mother had to convince him to take it.

In the comics, Steve Rogers has been replaced a number of times, most recently by Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (played in the films by Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson/The Falcon (Anthony Mackie).  Presumably, we have to wait until ‘Avengers 4’ arrives to see if that will occur in the movies.

Now that Evans has walked away, is he setting off a series of tumbling dominoes?  Let’s be honest, everyone thought Robert Downey Jr. would be the first O.G. Marvel star to depart, but it appears that Marvel has been shoveling money in his direction to get him to stay since his previous contract expired some time ago.  And there are plans for a fourth ‘Thor’ and a solo ‘Black Widow’ movie, so Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson are staying put.

At least we’ll get one final film with Evans as Cap, ‘Avengers 4′.  How do you feel about Evans’ retirement from the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Jason Motes

Jason’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes. Jason’s father gamely agreed to read him comic books as bedtime stories instead of ‘Snow White.’ (Super Friends being his favorite.) Jason saw all of the original Star Wars movies (and Indiana Jones and Superman and Star Trek…) in the theaters. Yes, he is old. And grew up in the most GEEKTASTIC decade ever, the 80s, devouring a steady diet of GI Joe, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, Princess of Power and (best of all) Jem! (It totally counts as sci fi! They had a sentient computer that projected holograms!) Jason has studied literature, journalism, film history and has a degree in creative writing (and a minor in psychology) from the University of South Alabama. He has worked as a technical writer and proofreader. These days, most of his creative energy goes into his blog and writing for this site! He lives with the cutest puppies ever.
