James Gunn to write and maybe direct Suicide Squad 2 | SciFiNow

A few months after being fired from Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, writer/director James Gunn has already been scouted by Warner Bros’ DC Extended Universe.

Gunn is reportedly set to write the script for the sequel to Suicide Squad. The film is also currently on the lookout for a director, so it’s likely that Gunn could end up helming it too. According to Warner Bros, Gunn isn’t developing a ‘sequel’ to Suicide Squad. Instead, it’s more of a brand new take on the property.

Following the announcement of Gunn’s involvement, Suicide Squad director David Ayer tweeted his support. “I think it’s an incredibly brave and smart move by the studio,” he said. “James is the right man for the job!”

Gunn was fired by Disney in July 2018 after a string of Gunn’s old tweets which joked about inappropriate topics were unearthed. Following his firing, Guardians Of The Galaxy stars Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn and Pom Klementieff penned an open letter requesting that Disney reinstate Gunn as director for Vol. 3.

“We fully support James Gunn,” they wrote. “We were all shocked by his abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss. In that time we have been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3, as well as discouraged by those who were so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories around him.”

However, Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger is still standing by the decision. Speaking to THR, he said: “The James Gunn decision was brought to me as a unanimous decision of a variety of executives at the studio and I supported it. I haven’t second-guessed their decision.”
