Into The Spider-Verse’ Producers Want A Villain That’s “Never Been In A Movie” For The Sequel, But There’s Only One Problem…

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ doesn’t debut for two weeks, but early screenings for critics have been going over like gangbusters with it currently holding a 100% ranking on Rotten Tomatoes.  With such a great pre-release reception, it seems that a sequel will be a given and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (‘The LEGO Movie’, ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’) already know what villain they’d like to focus on in the second film.  There’s just one tiny problem with their reasoning.

When asked which baddie they would use, they responded with The Rhino.  Miller stated:

“I mean, he’s never been depicted in a movie, so I feel like everybody knows the ones that were in the movies. They know Doc Ock, and they know Green Goblin, and they also know Mysterio.”

Lord added, “He also feels like the Bebop and Rocksteady for the Spider-Man world,” referencing the bumbling beast men from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Though the Rhino would probably make a great villain in ‘Into the Spider-Verse 2’, Miller’s statement that “he’s never been depicted in a movie,” is erroneous.  Paul Giamatti played The Rhino in 2014’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’.

Perhaps Lord and Miller can be forgiven for forgetting since The Rhino wasn’t the movie’s main villain.  That “honor” went to Jamie Foxx’s Electro.  Further muddying the water, Dane DeHaan also appeared in the villainous role as Harry Osborn.  While he never uses a villain moniker, it’s clear that he is meant to be an updated version of either the Green Goblin or Hobgoblin.

Meanwhile, in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, fledgling wall-crawler Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) will face off against the Kingpin (Liev Schreiber), Doc Ock (Kathryn Hahn) and the Prowler (Mahershala Ali).  Luckily, he will have the assistance of Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and her Sp//dr construct, Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage) and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney).

The film also features the voices of Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davis, Zoë Kravitz as Mary Jane Watson, Lily Tomlin as Aunt May, and Luna Lauren Velez as Rio Morales.  Chris Pine also voices another version of Peter Parker, while Oscar Isaac is portraying a character listed as just “Interesting Person #1.”

What villains would you like to see animated in future ‘Spider-Man’ movies?

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ swings into theaters on December 14.

Jax Motes

Jax’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes.
