Which Heroes Will Join Spider-Gwen In ‘Spider-Women’?

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ has just barely opened in theaters, but the early reviews have been glowing– it had a 100% positive ranking on Rotten Tomatoes, though it has now slipped to 98%– and Sony is already planning to literally create a “Spider-Verse” centered around this film.  A sequel has already been greenlit as well as a spin-off, ‘Spider-Women’, featuring Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen (voiced by Haliee Steinfeld).

News of this spin-off emerged a few weeks ago, with Bek Smith (‘Zoo’) named as the writer, with Amy Pascal producing, and Avi Arad, Christopher Miller and Phil Lord attached, most likely as executive producers, although that hasn’t been clarified.

Joaquim Dos Santos was listed as the director, but now it appears that the job is going to Lauren Montgomery, with Dos Santos tackling the ‘Spider-Verse’ sequel.

What wasn’t known was which Spider-Women would join Spider-Gwen in this cinematic endeavor.  Well, now we know– ‘Spider-Women’ will costar Jessica Drew and Silk!

Jessica Drew was the first Spider-Woman and remains perhaps the most famous.  She premiered in 1977 and was Archie Goodwin and Marie Severin.  She has super strength, agility, and speed and can stick to walls like most Spider-heroes.  Unlike most, she can fly/glide and fire electrical “Venom Blasts.”  She can also manipulate others with her pheromones.

Silk is Cindy Moon, who first appeared in 2014 and was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos.  Cindy turned out to be a classmate of Peter Parker’s who was also bitten by the same radioactive spider on the same field trip that Peter was on when he gained his powers, but unlike Peter, she was locked away by the villain Ezekiel who sought to use her powers for his gain.

Her basic powers are the same as Peter’s, super strength, agility, and speed, and the ability to cling to walls.  But she can generate natural webbing, which Peter cannot.  Her Spider-Sense is also stronger than his.  She is also not as strong as he is, but she is faster.  She also possesses an eidetic memory.

Sony is also said to be prepping a live-action ‘Silk’ movie, although whether that will be a stand-alone like ‘Venom’ or a tie-in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is unknown.

As for Spider-Gwen herself, she hails from a parallel universe, Earth-46, where she gained powers instead of Peter Parker.  What her fate is after ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ remains to be seen.

As Sony’s Chairperson of Motion Pictures, Amy Pascal said:

“I think it’s great that we’re going to be able to tell movies about female superheroes in this realm, and in the live-action realm as well, because I believe that there are going to be characters that really resonate for people. They’re funny and quirky and different, and heroic in all kinds of different ways that only animation allows you to do.”

‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ is now playing in theaters.

Jax Motes

Jax’s earliest memory is of watching ‘Batman,’ followed shortly by a memory of playing Batman & Robin with a friend, which entailed running outside in just their underwear and towels as capes. When adults told them they couldn’t run around outside in their underwear, both boys promptly whipped theirs off and ran around in just capes.
